Some services offer rapid access and advice where needed. Please see below for urgent referral methods and advice lines.

Please note these numbers are not for patients, who should contact their GP, or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or via www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk , in the event of a health query.

Accident and Emergency
Advice Line Call 020 3447 9783, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Staff in the Operations Centre will arrange for the appropriate clinician to phone back as required.

Acute Medicine Unit

Cancer

Cardiology

Chest Pain 
Rapid access clinic For patients with new or recent onset of exertional chest pain suggestive of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) or worsening symptoms in a patient with known IHD who is not under active follow up by a cardiologist. Referral criteria are on the official referral form and are in line with NICE guidance issued in April 2010. Patients are seen within two weeks.

Children and Adolescent Outpatients
Rapid access clinic Emergency assessment of children and young people under 18 who are referred by their GP, community midwife, health visitor, or social services (including rapid access seizure*). Patients can be seen on the same day the referral is made.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Rapid access clinic For patients experiencing acute exacerbation of diagnosed COPD.  The clinic offers respiratory specialist medical and nursing input including access to same day tests e.g. Chest X-ray, spirometry and blood gas analysis.

Early Pregnancy Unit 
Rapid access clinic For the urgent review of patients with problems in early pregnancy.
Location The Gynaecology Diagnostic and Outpatient Treatment Clinic 3, Lower Ground Floor, EGA Wing, Grafton Way

Saturday-Sunday, 9am-12.30pm (via A&E only)
Making a referral Emergency Gynaecology patients should be referred by calling 0845 155 5000 and asking switchboard to bleep the on-call gynae team on bleep 5226 or 5805. You can also send a referral letter by fax to 020 7691 5861 or ask your patient to present directly to Clinic 3 with a referral letter.

Stroke
Advice Line If stroke symptoms appeared less than 4.5 hours ago call 999 immediately as thrombolysis might be possible. For symptoms with a longer history of onset contact the stroke registrar on 077 5373 9286 for advice on the appropriate referral contact.

TIA Triage Service
Clinic TIA Triage Service operates 7 days a week and is consultant-led. (This clinic is not aimed at stroke patients. Recent strokes are dealt with through the Hyperacute Stroke Unit and GPs should access this by calling 999 or sending the patient into hospital)

Tropical Medicine Emergency
Walk-in clinic For travellers who have returned from the tropics and are unwell, with fever or bloody diarrhoea. Out of hours, travellers can attend the Accident & Emergency Department at University College Hospital.

Tuberculosis (TB)
Walk-in clinic For patients with suspected tuberculosis. This clinic does not provide a service for missed BCGs or Occupational Health screening.
