It steers patients through the entire process - from making the decision to have surgery, the intervention itself and the recovery and aftercare. The film is part of the UCLH Enhanced Recovery (ER) programme which aims to improve quality of care by helping patients recover sooner and reduce delays in their care. By providing practical information and advice on what patients can expect when they visit our hospitals, patient anxiety surrounding the process is reduced which leads to improved recovery times.
Sophia Mavrommatis, clinical improvement facilitator, said: "We know that when patients are involved in their own care it has a positive impact on clinical outcomes. Patients that are physically, mentally and emotionally prepared for their operation, can return to their normal activities more quickly, thereby creating an overall better patient experience."
The film is split up into 15 chapters to make it manageable and patients can choose to watch the sections most relevant to them. The chapters aim to reassure patients and answer practical questions they may have about their hospital visits and care. The information is usefully collated in one place and is helpful not only for patients but also for relatives and carers who may not know what to expect.
Sophia said: "The credit for this film has to go to the patients and staff of UCLH - it was their support, time and enthusiasm that made it possible."
