Welcome

Welcome to the bi-monthly update on the development of the University College Hospital (UCH) Macmillan Cancer Centre.  Please email cancer.centre@uclh.nhs.uk with any comments, queries or feedback.

Building update

Work is progressing as scheduled.   In the next few weeks work will include installation of the ground floor entrances (including revolving doors), fit out of the main reception area, continuing installation of fixtures, fittings and equipment, completing internal decorations and taking delivery of new MRI scanning equipment.  Visit our website for new photos

Productive outpatients pilot

We are working with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement on a ‘productive outpatients’ project aiming to streamline and improve the experience for both patients and staff in the cancer outpatients department.  We have started with five tumour sites; myeloma, lymphoma, gynaecological cancer, lung and sarcoma.  Each site has defined clinical leads for the project and representatives for each staff group involved in outpatients.  We are working with each multi-disciplinary team to identify how we can involve patients in the projects.  We are also working with patients from the Patient Experience Board to help inform the work.  Email: cancer.centre@uclh.nhs.uk for more information.

Information, communications and technology (ICT) update

The self check-in kiosks that will be used in the Cancer Centre were launched at University College Hospital (UCH) in July.  Patient feedback has been very positive so far, with around 99% of patients checking in for their outpatient appointment via the kiosks.  The ICT for the Cancer Centre is progressing at great speed and everything looks set for a live pilot of the systems in January 2012.

New name for new service

The service for 13-24 year olds on the third floor of the Cancer Centre will be known as the teenage and young adult service following consultation with current patients.  Unsure whether our patients wanted to be considered a 'teenager' or 'young person' we canvassed views via labelled bottles into which patients could drop a token corresponding to their preferred name. The vote was unanimous!  The treatment and recreation space on the floor will be officially known as the Teenage Cancer Trust hub. Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) has contributed £2.25 million towards the new service creating what promises to be an innovative bespoke unit.
Contact Gabrielle Mroziewicz (gabrielle.mroziewicz@uclh.nhs.uk), Cancer Centre Project Coordinator for more information.

Environment update

Plans to enhance the Centre’s environment through art are progressing well.  Limited edition prints created by artists to decorate the hoardings of the Centre whilst it is being built have been auctioned raising some £3600 for the Centre appeal.  The remaining prints are currently on display in the Rosenheim Building.  Grayson Perry, Rob Ryan, Peter Blake, Charley Edwards and Morag Myerscough have created floors for the waiting areas within the Centre, bringing colour and interest to patients whilst they wait.  As mentioned in the June edition of e-news, patients are invited to contribute to Stuart Haygarth’s sculpture for the ground floor atrium and are also invited to share their experiences of cancer with Wellcome Trust funded artist in residence Simeon Nelson who will be creating art to feature in the windows along Capper Street.  Recent Central St. Martins graduate Mathew Hayes has been selected to produced a dichromatic glass artwork depicting birds in flight for the Macmillan Support and Information Centre.
For information on any of these projects contact Guy Noble (guy.noble@uclh.nhs.uk), arts curator.

UCLH Charitable Foundation update

The UCLH Charitable Foundation continues to generate income and new support for the Cancer Centre.   Recently funds have been received in memory of patients and from cancer charities, trusts and foundations, private gifts and small special events.   In addition, UCLH patients and staff have made personal special efforts.  The target of £30 million is within reach - currently some £25.5 million has been either pledged or donated.  A fundraising ball will be held at the Dorchester Hotel, London on Wednesday 9 November and other events are being organised.   The challenge is to continue with various activities throughout 2011 and 2012.  If you can help raise funds please contact John Gray or Hannah Persaud on 020 3447 9558.  We are grateful for all donations and support.
