Service performance
Patient support services
We have a team of nurse specialists who support the patients throughout their treatment programme at the Heart Hospital.
All nurse specialists attend the consultants' outpatient cinics. They provide additional support and advice for patients and help coordinate diagnostic tests.
All patients (and a caring companion) are encouraged to attend our half day pre-admission service, which is run by the same nurse specialists. This provides opportunity for patients and relatives to visit the Heart Hospital, attend a talk by a nurse specialist that explains all aspects of the surgery and after-care and have the opportunity to ask any questions. A video highlighting the patient experience is also shown and patients are taken up to the Intensive Care Unit so they can see where they will be post-surgery. Blood tests and MRSA swabs are also taken at pre-admission so all patients are fully prepared for surgery.
Patient aftercare
Our usual post-surgery care is one follow-up outpatient appointment with the consultant surgeon. Patients will be referred back to the care of their consultant cardiologist as soon as appropriate.
Post-surgical rehabilitation care is coordinated by Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse, Jean Eplett.
