The Emergency Services Division (ESD) consists of 4 areas: the Emergency Department (A&E), the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), Discharge Services and the Operations Centre.
Our Accident and Emergency (A&E) service provides ready access to high-quality nursing and doctor care to patients. Although we deal with many severe injuries/accidents, the main proportion of patients attending A&E are for minor injuries.
Our Acute Medical Unit (AMU) comprises a 56-bed unit located on Floor 1 of the tower at University College Hospital (UCH). Its primary role is to provide rapid assessment, diagnosis, stabilisation, observation and early treatment of patients from A&E and GPs irrespective of their underlying diagnosis.
The discharge services team provides support to the clinical areas throughout the UCH tower to facilitate prompt and safe patient discharge.
The operations team work closely with all other areas in the division and the UCH tower to ensure that both emergency and planned patient admissions are completed.
