UCLH is involved in a number of projects to conserve energy and cut carbon across the Trust.
We were one of the first NHS trusts to sign up to the national 10:10 Campaign and have pledged to cut carbon emissions by ten percent over the next year. UCLH currently produces 28,000 tonnes of carbon annually.
In 2008, London’s Mayor Boris Johnson named UCLH as one of the top carbon-busting organisations in the capital. The Trust received a gold award by the carbon mentoring programme Green500 for the progress it has made in identifying energy saving initiatives. It’s all part of the Mayor’s campaign to reduce CO2 emissions in London by 1.5 million tonnes over two and a half years. UCLH was the only trust in London to win a gold award. Two other hospital trusts won silver awards.
Meanwhile our ‘Mr Switch It’ has slapped on hundreds of stickers (‘Turn off!’ ‘Switch off!’ ‘Close door!’) on taps, computers, light switches and thermostats in wards, labs and offices across the trust, with the help of staff recruited as carbon champions.
